Women's Tennis Grinds Out Critical NEWMAC Win Over Smith, 5-4

Springfield, Mass. - September 27, 2016 - The Springfield College women's tennis team battled past visiting Smith College, 5-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown at Appleton Courts on Tuesday.

Springfield improved to 5-3 overall, including 3-3 in NEWMAC play, as it rattled off its fifth-straight win for the second time in the past four seasons, the last coming during the 2013-2014 campaign.

The Pride earned two of the three doubles points as it picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3.  At the top spot, Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) cruised to an 8-1 win, while Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) delivered an 8-3 win at No. 3.

Needing just three points in singles play for the win, the Pride used a 6-0, 6-1 win by Etter at No. 4 and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph by Freadman at No. 5 to set the stage for one of their teammates to clinch the win.  Parrish came through for the Pride with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 2 to seal the Pride's fifth-straight victory.

The Pride will be back in action tomorrow when it heads to face Suffolk for a 6 pm non-conference meeting.
