Women's Soccer Cruises Past Western New England, 6-0

Springfield, Mass. - September 7, 2016 - Six different student-athletes recorded a goal as the Springfield College women's soccer program cruised to a 6-0 win over cross-town rival Western New England University on Wednesday afternoon at Supernant Field. 

With the win, Springfield College improves to 2-1 overall, while the Golden Bears fall to 2-2 overall. The Pride outshot the Golden Bears, 20-2, including a 9-0 margin in the first half. Springfield also held an 6-1 advantage in corner kicks over 90 minutes. 

In net, junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) picked up the win without needing to make a save, while Isabella Inglese (Wolcott, Conn.) and Brooke Fairman (Huntington, Mass.) both made appearances for the Pride. For Western New England, Marissa Veilleux (Newington, Conn.) made six stops, and took the loss. Springfield College's junior midfielder Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) led the way with three points, including a goal and an assist, while classmate Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) posted a game-high six shots, including five that were on cage.

Springfield College got on the board just 6:26 into the contest, when junior midfielder Dakota Kelly (Bethany, Conn.) reeled in a pass from senior Julia Cormier (New Bedford, Mass.), and tucked a shot past Veilleux to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage.

Just 9:53 later, Springfield College extended its lead to two when Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.) found the back of the net for the first time this season to make it 2-0 midway through the opening stanza.

The Pride extended its lead to three just 5:57 into the second half, when a foul was called against the Golden Bears inside the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for senior captain Elizabeth Monsen (Wayne, N.J.), who capitalized to make it 3-0, Springfield, with 39:03 to play.

With 26:39 remaining in the contest, Silva scored her first goal in a Springfield College uniform on a play that was set up by senior Shannon Wells (Milton, Vt.), before the Pride scored back-to-back goals just 2:11 apart from one another to seal the 6-0 win. With 13:23 to play, junior forward Kim Quiles (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) netted an opportunity to make it 5-0, before freshman Gab Matthews (Canton, Mass.) scored for the first time in her career with 11:12 on the clock to complete the 6-0 win.

Up next, Springfield will host No. 19 Amherst College on Tuesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. on Brock-Affleck Field.
