Women's Volleyball Handles Westfield State In Straight Sets

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - October 5, 2018 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team handled Westfield State by the set scores of 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 on Friday night in Blake Arena.

Springfield, who again is appearing in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Coaches Poll among teams receiving votes, improved to 17-2 with the win. The Owls dropped to 3-17.

The Pride finished the night hitting at a .347 clip as it totaled 43 kills compared to just 17 by the visitors.  Jen Donnelly (Exeter, R.I.) racked up nine kills on 16-errorless attempts, while both Hayley Kmetz (Ardsley, N.Y.) and Katie vonKampen (South Setauket, N.Y.) notched six kills.  Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) contributed 30 of the Pride's 40 assists in the win, Briana Tovar (Tucson, Ariz.) delivered three aces, and both Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) and Kait Bonsignore (St. Louis, Mo.) had four blocks.

Springfield's offense erupted for 17 kills at a .405 clip in the first set, with Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) putting away a team-best five kills for the hosts.  vonKampen buried an overpass kill to give the hosts an 11-4 cushion and Springfield would take complete control after Bancroft accounted for five kills in an eight-point stretch to make it a 21-10 contest.  Kmetz concluded the frame with her third kill of the evening to wrap up the 25-13 win.

In the second set, Springfield surged out to a 14-5 advantage on another kill from Kmetz, but Westfield State would pull within 23-19 following a Pride attack error.  However, the Pride would get back-to-back kills from Walsh to conclude the 25-19 victory in a frame where it totaled 23 digs, including seven from Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.).

Trailing 3-2 in the third set, Springfield put together a 10-2 burst that was capped off by a big swing from Kayley Cimino (Cumberland, Maine) to earn a 12-5 cushion.  After the Owls battled back to 12-8, Springfield put the match away with a 13-6 run, using Cimino's third kill of the set to finish off the 25-14 win.

Springfield will wrap up its five-match homestand on Tuesday evening when it returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action against Mount Holyoke for a 7 pm contest.
