Football Powers Past Maine Maritime, 56-7

Box Score

Castine, Maine - November 7, 2019 - The Springfield College football team erupted for 621 yards of total offense to cruise past Maine Maritime, 56-7, on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

The win proved to be the Pride's fifth-straight as it improved to 6-3 on the year, including 5-1 in conference play.  The loss dropped the Mariners to 0-9.

It was a historic performance by Springfield as the offense churned out a program-record 84 rushing attempts, besting the previous mark of 83 that was set against Norwich in 1991. All told, the Pride ran for 561 yards in the victory and averaged 6.7 yards per carry.  Isaiah Cashwell-Doe (Woburn, Mass.) had a team-best 95 yards as 12 different players carried the ball in the win.  Nick Rajotte (North Attelboro, Mass.) found the end zone twice to highlight the ground attack in a game where the Pride had the ball on offense for 38:29.  Defensively, the Pride allowed just 162 yards of total offense, including only 45 rushing yards, and forced five turnovers, as Chaz Ruffin (Enfield, Conn.) had a pair of sacks and Christian Hutra (Holmes, N.Y.) made all eight of his extra point attempts.

After the Mariners fumbled just two plays into the game, Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) found the end zone from two yards out at the 11:26 mark of the opening quarter.  The Pride added to its lead just over four minutes later when Rajotte broke free the end on the right side and scampered in from 15 yards out.

Springfield would strike just 39 seconds into the second quarter when Shade went to the air for a 48-yard strike to Andrew Smith (Northport, N.Y.), and the Pride would regain possession when Ryan Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) made an unbelievable play on special teams, stripping the ball and staying in bounds on the recovery.  Four plays later, Patrick Ladas (Middlefield, Conn.) plowed his way into the end zone from four yards to make it a 28-0 contest with 12:54 on the clock. Rajotte would account for the final touchdown of the first half on a 12-yard score with 5:30 remaining as he capped off an 11-play, 80-yard drive that chewed up 5:15 off the clock.

The Pride opened the second half with posession and marched 71 yards in nine plays for their sixth touchdown on the game, this time coming from Tim Callahan (Enfield, Conn.) from three yards out.  Jeff Stern (Marblehead, Mass.) broke into the scoring column with 11:25 remaining in regulation on a two-yard score, before the Mariners would respond on the next drive with their lone score of the game thanks to a 50-yard touchdown run by Cooper Chiasson on 3rd and 12. The Pride would then close out the scoring thanks to another 80-yard drive that lasted 6:19 and took 13 plays as Skyler Bateman (Gansevoort, N.Y.) muscled his way in for a five-yard touchdown run to make it a 56-7 contest.

The Pride will close out the regular season next Saturday on Stagg Field as it hosts MIT at 12 pm.
