Box Score Boston, Mass. - February 1, 2020 - The Springfield College women's basketball team earned an 80-41 victory over Emerson College on Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at The Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym.
Springfield have opened up NEWMAC play with six-straight wins and have a 15-6 overall record. Emerson falls to 11-9 and 2-4 in NEWMAC league play.
Springfield was led by efficient shooting performances from Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.). Hourihan tallied 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting with eight boards and a pair of rejections while Dzindolet scored 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 17 minutes of action. Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) finished with eight points and six rebounds. Springfield shot 31-of-67 (46%) from the field and 8-of-15 (53%) from deep and dominated the Lions on the glass, 48-29.
Emerson was paced by Sam Boyle, who finished the contest with a game-high 16 points and five rebounds. Quinn Madden added eight points and four assists. Emerson committed 26 turnovers in the setback.
Springfield opened up the game on a 9-2 run after Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) converted on a layup with 5:33 remaining in the quarter. After a Kate Foultz three at 5:15 to make the score 9-5, Springfield finished the quarter outscoring the Lions 14-2 to improve the score 25-7 in favor of the Pride.
With 6:29 remaining in the half, Hourihan canned back-to-back threes off assists from Stephanie Lyons to push the Pride's advantage to 35-7. From there, Emerson ripped off an 11-2 run as Madden knocked down a jumper with five seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 37-18.
At the 1:13 mark, Springfield would take a 59-25 lead as Amanda Carr (West Haven, Conn.) would knock down a pair of free throws. Springfield defense limited Emerson to nine points and just 1-of-8 from three in the third quarter.
Springfield would take their largest lead of the afternoon at 75-30 as Dzindolet would feed Madeline Fay (Braintree, Mass.) for the post bucket with 4:41 remaining. The cushion would allow the Pride to coast to the victory.
Springfield will now match up with Smith on Wednesday at 7 pm.
