Post Leads 20th-Ranked Men's Basketball Past MIT, 66-62

Springfield, Mass. - February 15, 2020 - The Springfield College men's basketball team earned their eighth-straight victory in a 66-62 win over MIT in Blake Arena on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. 

The win allowed Springfield to improve to 20-3, 11-1 in conference play as the Pride entered the game ranked 20th in the country in this week's D3hoops.com National Poll. MIT slipped to 10-13, 3-9 in the setback.

Heath Post (Cheshire, Conn.) was outstanding in the victory, producing 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting, to go along with 18 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.  Trey Witter (Unionville, Conn.) contributed 14 points off the bench including 12 in the second half, while Jake Ross (Northampton, Mass.) added 10 points, eight boards, four assists, and two blocks. Deonte Sandifer (Pittsfield, Mass.) contributed a game-high five assists.

For MIT, Alex Cho scored 20 points, Ian Hinkley addd 16 points and 10 boards, and Grant Miller registered 10 points and nine caroms.

The Pride jumped out to a 7-0 lead after a wing three from Ross just under two minutes into the game and the hosts would open up a double-digit lead at 17-7 when Ross hit a turnaround jumper in the lane at 12:55 to make it a 17-7 contest.  Springfield would then pour on an 11-0 spurt, capped off by a baseline jumper from Post with 9:21 remaining, to have their lead balloon to 28-9.  However, MIT would respond with a 12-straight points to pull within 28-21 on a bucket by Hinkley with under four minutes to play.  Ross would connect for a pair from the line for Springfield's first points in over five minutes at 3:48 and Post would elevate for a triple of his own at the 1:30 mark which allowed Springfield to regain a 10-point edge at 37-27.

Springfield took a 37-29 lead into the second half and Witter would connect in the lane at the 11:57 mark to give the Pride a 47-36 cushion.  MIT would answer back with a 7-0 burst thanks to triples from Hinkey and Cho to make it 47-43 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.  Over the next six-plus minutes, Springfield used a 11-5 surge, capped off by a triple from Witter to open up the 58-48 advantage.  Springfield's lead would grow to as many as 13 points at 62-49 following a four-point play from Witter with 2:49 on the clock, but MIT would charge back with a 13-2 run of their own to make it a one-possession game at 64-62 with under five seconds play.  However, Post would seal the victory with a pair from the stripe to close out the Pride's 11th conference win of the year.  

Springfield will now focus on its final regular-season road test on Wednesday when it travels to face WPI for a 5:30 pm tilt.
