Box Score South Hadley, Mass. - October 19, 2021 - Despite holding a 2-1 edge midway through the first quarter, the Springfield College field hockey team was bested by Mount Holyoke College, 5-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday night.
For the Lyons, Kass Lawrence found the back of the cage four times to help the hosts improve to 3-8 overall and 2-4 in league play while the Pride slip to 4-9 on the year with a 1-5 record in conference play. In net, Rachel Katzenberg earned her third win of the year with a four-save performance while her counterpart, Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) posted 13 saves in the setback.
Mount Holyoke College got on the board just 30 seconds into the game when Margaret Robb played a ball into Mollee Malboeuf from the right sideline before the junior turned around a slipped a pass to Lawrence in front of the net. Lawrence capitalized on the opportunity to give the Lyons an early 1-0 lead.
Springfield College then responded with a pair of goals just 2:03 apart as Grace Majka (Simsbury, Conn.) tipped home a shot from Emma Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) with 8:24 on the clock before Mollie Duclos (Westport, Mass.) picked up a rebound an tucked a shot past Katzenberg to make it 2-1, Pride, with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter.
The two sides went back-and-forth until the waning seconds of the second quarter when Sophia Guziewicz sent a ball towards the cage that Lawrence dove towards and was able to tip past DeLasho for her second of the game, knotting the score at 2-2 just prior to the halftime break.
Midway through the third quarter the Lyons took the lead for good as Robb scored on an unassisted strike with 8:10 on the clock. Just 4:11 later, Lawrence gave the Lyons some insurance when buried a rebound with 3:59 to play in the third. The Lyons tacked on the final goal of the game with 1:49 remaining as Robb fired a shot on net, which was saved by DeLasho, but Lawrence once again dove and connected with the loose ball for her fourth marker of the evening.
On Saturday, Springfield will travel to play Smith at 12 pm.
