Box Score Northampton, Mass. - October 23, 2021 - The Springfield College field hockey team netted the first goal of the game but was ultimately defeated by host Smith College, 5-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday.
Springfield dropped to 4-10, 1-6 in conference play in the setback, while Smith improved to 5-11, 3-4.
The Pioneers owned a 27-7 advantage in shots on the day and took 14 of the game's 18 penalty corners.
Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) totaled 11 saves in goal for the Pride, while Sydney Harris (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a defensive save on the afternoon.
Springfield scored the game's first goal at the 12:03 mark of the game when Emma Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) struck for the visitors thank to an assist from Gabby Inkel (South Windsor, Conn.).
However, Smith broke the game open by scoring four goals in a five-plus minute span in the second quarter to open up a 4-1 edge. Karlie Guimond delivered a pair of strikes, including the eventual game-winning marker, during the scoring burst.
The hosts added an insurance goal in the 53rd minute as Smith owned a 13-1 edge in shots in the final 30 minutes of play.
Springfield will travel to play Gordon in a non-conference clash on Tuesday at 4 pm.
