Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 28, 2021 - In their non-conference contest of the year, the Springfield College field hockey team was upended by a 6-0 decision to Western New England on Thursday night on Stagg Field.
Springfield's record dipped to 5-11 with the setback and Western New England moved to 10-5. The Golden Bears maintained a 21-6 edge in shots and had a slight 7-6 advantage in penalty corners;
After a scoreless first period that featured a terrific oppurtunity from Carly Torrance (Concord, N.H.) that sailed just wide at 9:53, the visitors struck for the game's first goal with just over five minutes left in the first half. Ali Larochelle collected a feed from the right side from Taylor Klesyk and slotted home a strike at 24:42. The Golden Bears tacked on another goal with 1:14 remaining on the clock as Sarah Johnston snagged a rebound off Klesyk's initial bid and slipped home the marker to make it a 2-0 contest at the halftime break.
WNE found the back of the cage three times in the third quarter to push their advantage to 5-0. Larochelle netted her second of the evening when she slipped behind the Springfield defense off a great look from Klesyk to finish a one-on-one bid with the Springfield netminder at 32:47. Just over five minutes later, Klesyk found the back of the cage after cleaning up her own rebound, and . Carly-Anna Barba got her stick in front of a drive by Ali Martin on WNE's fifth penalty corner of the game to make it 5-0 with 50 seconds remaining in the third.
The Golden Bears completed the scoring in the 51st minute as Johnston jammed in her rebound for the visitors sixth goal of the game. Lyndsey DeLasho (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) tallied 11 saves in the loss for the Pride.
The Pride will play its final game of the 2021 season on Saturday at 5 pm when it hosts Wellesley.
