Box Score Springfield, Mass. - December 7, 2021 - The Springfield College men's basketball team was upended by nationally-ranked Amherst, 75-61, in non-conference play in Blake Arena on Tuesday evening.
Amherst, who was ranked No. 21 in the this week's D3hoops.com National Poll, moved to 8-0 with the victory, while the Pride slipped to 2-6.
Collin Lindsay (East Longmeadow, Mass.) continued his strong play with a team-best 15 points and five rebounds, while Jacob Morales (Montvale, N.J.) canned four three-pointers en route to a 13-point outing. Daryl Costa (Providence, R.I.) added seven points and five rebounds for a Pride team that shot 20-for-51 (39%) in the game.
The Mammoths controlled the inside play, owning a 40-20 edge on the glass and outscoring the hosts by a 44-14 margin in the paint. Grant Robinson led all players with 17 points, Michael Schretter registered a double double of 11 points and 11 boards, and Garret Day knocked down three three-pointers on his way to 13 points. The Mammoths shot made 50% of their shots in the contest, going 30-for-60 from the field.
Morales drilled his third three-pointer in the opening eight-plus minutes to even the game up at 11 with 11:16 on the clock. With 7:59 remaining in the frame, Justin Dunne (Derry, N.H.) buried a triple to put the hosts on top, 17-15, only to have the visitors answer with an 8-2 burst that was capped off by a dunk from Ryker Vance at the 4:48 mark. A jumper from Lindsay with 2:01 left in the half knotted things up at 25 apiece, but Amherst would rattle off a 7-2 burst to head into the break with a 32-27 edge.
After Lindsay knocked a three-pointer just over two minutes into the second to pull the Pride within 37-32, the visitors scored nine-straight points to expand their lead to 46-32 at 13:16 on an inside finish by Will Scherer. However, an eight-point burst by the Pride, including another triple from Lindsay, dwindled to Mammoths lead 51-45 following a pair of freebies from Costa at 9:50.
The visitors would respond one final time and poured on a 12-2 push in just over three minutes, bookended by a pair of triples from Robinson, as their lead grew to 16 points. The Pride would get no closer than 12 as the Mammoths held on for the 75-61 triumph.
The Pride will close out the first semester on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Williams at 4 pm.
