Top-Ranked Men's Volleyball Downs No. 10 Endicott In Four To Sweep Weekend Series

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - March 14, 2021 -  The Springfield College men's volleyball team downed Endicott for the second time in as many days on Sunday afternoon, besting the Gulls in four sets by the scores of 14-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-22.

The Pride completed the weekend series sweep with the win to improve to 2-0 on the season following a pair of victories over the nationally-ranked foe.  Springfield has been No. 1 in the AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll each week so far during the 2021 campaign, which the Gulls were ranked tenth in this week.

For the second-consecutive match, Springfield was able to limit the Gulls offense as the hosts hit at just a .083 percentage on the day.   Brennen Brandow (Manorville, N.Y.) delivered a match-high 16 kills which came at a .462 clip to pace the Pride attack, while Jarrett Anderson (San Jose, Calif.) added 12 kills of his own. Matt Lilley (Stony Brook, N.Y.) recorded 10 digs and 29 assists, Johjan Mussa Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) added five digs and a career-best seven assists, and Brandow, Anderson, and Nate Reynolds (Baltimore, Md.) each notched three blocks.

In the four sets, Springfield totaled 30 service errors. Endicott finished the afternoon with 14 service aces to offset just 26 kills, as Gabe Felicetti was impressive with nine kills and six aces.

Endicott controlled the first set with their aggression from the end line as the hosts rattled off eight aces in the frame and limited Springfield to just two total kills that came at a -.273 hitting percentage.  Holding onto a 9-5 lead, Endicott used a 10-4 surge to outdistance themselves en route to a 25-14 win, despite only producing four kills of their own at a .071 clip.

The Gulls again jumped out to a fast start in the second set, seizing an 11-7 advantage as the Pride whistled for a timeout.  Springfield would find itself training 21-17 but would rattle off four-consecutive points to knot the frame up at 21 apiece.  The hosts would earn set point at 24-23, but the Pride would respond with kills from Brandow and Anderson for set point of their own.  Endicott would then commit their seventh attack error of the set as the Pride captured a 26-24 victory.

Springfield carried that momentum in the third set and dictated the pace from the endline, as four early aces, including two from Brandow, gave the Pride an 11-3 cushion.  Brandow would later bounce a ball in transition as the Gulls whistled for their second timeout at 13-5 and Liam York (Kailua, Hawaii) tipped a kill around the Endicott block to push the advantage to 18-9.  Back-to-back blocks from the Pride would get them set point before Chris Parker (East Northport, N.Y.) drilled a kill out of the middle for the 25-16 win.  The Pride hit .600 in the stanza, totaling 12 kills on 20 errorless attempts, led by three from both Brandow and Anderson.

In the fourth, Springfield put together a 6-1 burst to rally from an early 9-7 hole to force Endicott into a timeout at 13-10 as York ripped a kill in transition.  The Pride would hold a four-point lead for the remainder of the set until Brandow blistered a cross court kill for match point.  Three players later, Brandow sealed the win with his seventh kill of the set for the 25-22 win.

Next up for Springfield will be a two-match series versus University of Northern Vermont-Johnson, beginning on Friday night at 6 pm in Blake Arena.  No spectators will not be allowed.
