Box Score Springfield, Mass. - May 2, 2021 - In their final contest of the season, the Springfield College women's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 win over Western New England on Sunday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
Playing three, 35-minute periods, the Pride punched in two goals in the first period before the teams played a scoreless second and traded goals in the third. Springfield owned a 22-7 advantage in shots a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks. It marked Springfield's first home game since it competed in the ECAC Division III Championship Second Round, over 500 days ago.
Springfield scored the opening goal of the game in the 12th minute after earning its first corner kick of the game. Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) blistered a bending ball towards the back post that Alyana Sosa (Naugatuck, Conn.) ran onto and slotted past the Western New England keeper to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.
With just over four minutes remaining in the opening period, the Pride doubled its lead as Dale delivered her second assist of the afternoon. The junior slipped a through ball behind the Western New England back line that Jen Walker (Webster, Mass. ) ran onto and ripped a shot into the top left corner for her first collegiate marker.
After a scoreless second, WNE cut it to a one-goal goal in the 86th minute when Hayley Gilmore sent a ball towards net from midfield that skipped off the wet turf and through the hands of Springfield's goalie. However, the Pride would answer back just over four minutes later to seal the victory. Dale collected a throw in from Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.) with her back to the goal before she turned and ripped a left-footed strike from just outside the box to make it a 3-1 contest.
