Field Hockey Falls To No. 4 Amherst

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - October 13, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team was defeated by host Amherst College, 8-0, in non-conference action on Thursday evening.

The Mammoths entered the game ranked No. 4 in the country in the latest NFHCA National Poll and earned their eighth-straight win to improve to 10-2.  It marked the fourth time this season that the Pride has played a nationally-ranked team as it dipped to 4-8.

The Mammoths got on the board in the game's fifth minute when Beth Williamson converted a penalty corner opportunity, taking a pass from Kat Mason, who received the insert pass and slid it over to Williamson.  Muffie Mazambani scored the next two goals for Amherst, as she scored off another penalty corner chance before Gwen Allen set up the next score and slid a pass to Mazambani, who re-directed the ball into the goal for a 3-0 lead.

With 6:17 remaining in the second quarter, Kat Mason cut along the baseline to the goal before veering out in front of it and slapping a backhand in for a 4-0 lead. The Mammoths made it 5-0 before halftime when Anna Aiello stole a clear outside of the circle and fired the ball back into the circle and on goal, where Paige DiBiase was stationed to tip it up over the stick of the Springfield keeper. Aiello was impressive in the the third quarter, scoring three times, twice unassisted and once off an assist from Mason, to extend the lead to 8-0.

In her first collegiate goalkeeping experience Camryn Morano (Middleboro, Mass.) made five saves as she saw 24 shots on the evening.

Springfield will return to conference play on Saturday and play in its third-straight road game as it travels to Clark for a 12 pm contest.
