Box Score Worcester, Mass. - October 15, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team battled its way to a critical conference win over Clark as it prevailed by a 2-0 margin on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
The win boosted the Pride's record to 5-8, 2-3 in conference play, while the Cougars fell to 6-8, 1-5.
Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) returned to the lineup and delivered another shutout as she made nine saves in the victory. Clark held a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corners in the contest.
Springfield opened up the scoring in the ninth minute on the game's first penalty corner as Lily Depew (Acton, Mass.) connected with Claire Munkacsi (Gorham, Maine) for what would prove to be the only goal of the first half.
Just over three minutes into the fourth, Niland came up in a huge spot as she saved her second penalty stroke of the season to keep the Cougars off the board. The Pride tacked on an insurance goal in the 57th minute when Emma Robinson (Wilbraham, Mass.) got behind Clark's defense off a feed from Maddy Dunne (Clifton Park, N.Y.) to put the game out of reach. Niland made five of her nine saves in the final 15 minutes of action to preserve the shutout victory.
Springfield returns to Stagg Field on Tuesday night for a 7 pm tilt with Mount Holyoke as it begins its three-game homestand.
