Box Score Springfield, Mass. - October 2, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team delivered a 3-0 shutout victory over Nichols College on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The win snapped the Pride's six-game slide as it improved to 3-6 on the year, while Nichols dipped to 5-6.
Springfield owned a 29-4 advantage in shots on the afternoon and took 10 of the 11 penalty corners that were called in the game. Sophia Venable made 17 saves for the Bison, while Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) needed to make just three stops to earn the victory in goal.
Springfield was on the offensive from the opening whistle and registered 12 shots in the first quarter, with Venable making eight saves. Springfield finally broke through at 26:22 when Kalista Fontanella (Avon, Conn.) delivered a centering pass to Audrey Bresciano (Greenfield, Mass.), who collected the feed and slotted in a shot into the lower right corner. The hosts would tack on another strike just under three minutes later as Fontanella again generated the scoring chance as her pass found Audrey Hayes (Oxford, Mass.) alone on the left post as she jammed in the Pride's second marker of the contest.
The Pride added an insurance goal in the 47th minute to complete the scoring. After Bresciano connected on a centering pass on the run, Fontanella tapped the ball ahead to Hayes who slammed in the Pride's third goal of the afternoon.
On Tuesday evening, Springfield will return to conference play and host Wheaton at 7 pm.
