No. 9 Babson Topples Field Hockey

Box Score

Babson Park, Mass. - October 8, 2022 - Competing against a nationally-ranked opponent for the third time this year, the Springfield College field hockey program fell on the road to No. 9 Babson, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

After producing back-to-back shutout victories, Springfield now stands at 4-7, 1-3 in conference games, while Babson is now 8-3, 4-0.  The Green and White finished with a 28-2 advantage in shots and a 14-1 margin in penalty corners.

Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored her first two goals of the season and Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) tallied her first goal of the season for the Beavers. Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) recorded her third shutout of the season in the victory.  Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) had a solid performance at the other end of the field for the Pride, making 12 saves.

Babson outshot the visitors 7-0 in the first quarter before finally getting on the scoreboard on a penalty corner in the first minute of the second stanza. Marguerite took a pass just inside the circle on the right side and fired a shot that went through traffic and snuck inside the left post. Springfield was able to get out of the first half facing a 1-0 deficit, despite being outshot 12-1.

The Beavers doubled their score in the 42nd minute when Marsh picked up a loose ball just inside the circle and buried a shot into the left side of the goal. Marguerite tacked on an insurance goal with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when she took a cross in the middle of the circle, worked around a defender to the right and slid a shot past the goalie for her second of the game.

Springfield will continue its three-game roadswing when it travels to nationally-ranked Amherst next Thursday.
