Springfield, Mass. - September 16, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to visiting WPI in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday on Stagg Field.

The win boosted the Engineers record to 3-4, 1-0 in conference play while the Pride fell to 2-3, 0-1. 

For the game, WPI owned a 14-2 advantage in shots and took nine of the game's 14 penalty corners.  In goal for WPI,  Nini Acquista was credited with the victory, while Savanna Harvey (Cumberland, Maine) and Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) split time in goal for the Pride and combined for three stops.

WPI controlled much of the play in the first half, holding a 7-1 edge in shots and a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.  After the Pride held the Engineers off the scoreboard in the first quarter, the visitors broke through with two goals in the final three-plus minutes of the half to go into the break to a 2-0 cushion.  Abbey Powers followed up her initial shot that was saved by flipping a bid into the air and over the goal line in the 27th minute before one-timing a Eliza Dutson centering pass with 35 seconds on the clock to conclude the first-half scoring. 

WPI added ot its lead in the 39th minute when Lauren Meinhold blistered a centering pass from the end line that Lauren Dishong was able to run onto and redirect into the back of the cage. Powers completed her hat trick in the 54 minute as she took a feed and then backed her way towards the cage before flicking a backhanded shot just inside the right post. 

This upcoming Wednesday, Springfield is slated to host Trinity at 6 pm.
