Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 28, 2022 - The Springfield College women's soccer program turned in a 1-1 decision against Williams College on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.
Springfield is now 4-2-1 on the season, while Williams adds a tie to its record at 5-2-1. This is the first time Springfield tied with Williams since 2019. Williams outshot the Pride, 19-5, and earned 10 corner kicks in the contest.
Springfield held tough defensively as A. Harper (Taylorsville, Utah) made seven saves in the game and had added assistance with defensive saves from Heather Jennato (Hooksett, N.H.) and Sonia Dugger (Belchertown, Mass.).
The Pride broke open the game in the 6th-minute as Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) sprinted past the defense looking to score, but fired the shot off the post, however Visiliky Rizos (Southampton, Mass.) cleaned up the miss to put Springfield ahead 1-0. Springfield was able to fend off the Ephs' attack for much of the first half of play courtesy of swarming defense led by Jennato, who came up with a pair of key stops throughout the half. The Ephs could not get past Harper, who made three-consecutive saves in two minutes, but the Ephs finally evened the score as Tess Belnap broke free and dumped in the game-tying goal for Williams to make the score 1-1. Both teams produced strong attacks in the final minutes of the half, yet to no avail keeping the score locked at one apiece.
Williams dominated possession in the second half with the hopes of going ahead of the Pride, but could not find a shot to get through the defense. At 65:22, Williams set up a corner kick that looked to generate a goal, but Dugger held down the post and cleared out the shot for the defensive save. Moments later in the 70th-minute, Jennato walled up a shot from Claire Tolliver to prevent the Ephs' score and continue the outstanding defensive team effort. With just six minutes remaining, Springfield claimed the ball and hoped to find the game-winning goal as Karly Suppicich (South Windsor, Conn.) weaved away from defenders and took aim outside the box, however Huelin slapped up the attempt to force the contest into tie.
The Pride return to non-conference play on Saturday at Coast Guard beginning at 1 pm.
