Box Score Springfield, Mass. - September 8, 2022 - The Springfield College field hockey program took a 2-1 overtime victory in its home opener against Worcester State on Stagg Field on Thursday evening.
Springfield earns its second win of the season and Worcester dips to 2-1. Springfield held a massive advantage in shots at 15-4 and earned 11 penalty corners in the victory.
Savanna Harvey (Cumberland, Maine) earns the victory in the cage, while Madison Ferrara collected five saves in the setback for the Lancers.
Both programs were locked in a scoreless tie for most of the first quarter. Springfield had a chance just 26 seconds into the quarter, but was kicked back by Ferrara. At 2:53, the Pride went on the attack as Nicolette Morlock (Rexford, N.Y.) controlled a pass up the middle and sent in a shot that went just wide that kept the game at 0-0. With 30 seconds remaining, Karalyn Jones pushed up the field for the Lancers and had one shot turned away from Harvey, but Jones was able to follow the shot and carry it to the cage to put the visitors' ahead at the end of the quarter.
Facing the deficit, the Pride held strong and looked to tie in the second stanza. The best attempt came at 26:07 with Audrey Bresciano (Greenfield, Mass.) angling a shot at the cage, but Ferrara booted it back to keep the one-goal edge for Worcester, which the Lancers carried into halftime.
Springfield held possession for most of the third quarter and was aggressively hunting for the equalizer, yet the Lancers withstood several chances. The Pride attempted five shots and were awarded six penalty corners in the third quarter alone.
With 7:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, Springfield was finally able to find its first goal of the game after Audrey Hayes (Oxford, Mass.) set up a penalty corner and eventually tracked down the loose ball and tapped in through to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams traded attempts in the final four minutes, yet both came up empty resulting in the extra period.
In the 63rd-minute, Springfield was sent on the attack after a clear from Lily Depew (Acton, Mass.) sent Grace Levansavich (Auburn, Mass.) up the field towards the offensive circle. Levansavich slipped the ball through the defender and dropped it off to Breciano in stride, who delivered the game-winner to lift the Pride over the Lancers in overtime.
Springfield will return to action on Saturday at 12:00 as the Pride travels to Roger Williams.
