Medford, Mass. - January 14, 2023- The Springfield College men's track and field team competed the first time in 2023 and finished second at the Tufts Jumbo Invitational.
In the seven-team field, the Pride scored 130 points to finish behind hosts Tufts, who totaled 159 points.
Springfield had five student-athletes place in the top eight of the 60 meter dash, led by Michael Scott (Shoreview, Minn.), who ran a 7.0 flat to take runner-up honors. Evan Weber (Purchase, N.Y.) and Seth Regan (Killingworth, Conn.) followed right behind him in 7.03 and 7.04, respectively, while Anthony Penta (Southington, Conn.) took seventh in 7. 18 and Colby Wilson (Tewksbury, Mass.) was eighth in 7.24.
The Pride would also rack up the points in the 200 meter dash, as Scott sprinted to a winning time of 22.79 and Regan took third in 22.84. Weber placed fifth in 23.24, while Giovanni Henrickson (Plymouth, Mass.) was seventh in 23.46 and Anik Dole (Dubai, UAE) crossed eighth in 23.58.
In the 60 meter hurdles, David Cataloni (Attleboro, Mass.) and Brad Palamondon (Woonsocket, R.I.) each placed in the top six with times of 8.97 and 9.16, and Thomas Czerwinski (Suffern, N.Y.) ran a 52.11 in the 400 meters to finish in fourth. Joe Wong (Salem, Mass.) ran a PR of 1:23.54 in the 600 to earn runner-up honors and would team up with Aidan Harmer (Hawthorne, N.J.), Adam Mula (West Townsend, Mass.), and Bradyn Cote (South Hadley, Mass.) to win the 4x800 relay in 8:29.01. In the 3,000, John DeRosa (Shelton, Conn.) produced a 8:50.08 and Christopher Vayda (Southampton, Mass.) registered a sixth-place time of 8:56.64.
In the 4x400 relay, Angel Martinez (Framingham, Mass.), Czerwinski, Connor Joyce (Hampden, Mass.), and Luke Chastain (New Milford, Conn.) combined their efforts to finish third in 3:42.64.
Jamie Cocca (Sand Lake, N.Y.) produced a heave of 15.31m in the weight throw to take third and finished fourth in the shot with a 13.75m. Alex McKenney (Ossinging, N.Y.) reached a height of 3.85m in the pole vault to take fourth, while in the long jump, Jamil Manu (Manchester, Conn.) registered a 6.18m to finish in sixth and Penta placed eigth with a 6.06m. In the high jump, Springfield had three in the top eight, with Mason Yusko (Fairport, N.Y.) and Daniel McGlashan (Haverhill, Mass.) hitting for fourth-place height of 1.80m. Daniel Hyde (Monroe, Conn.) added a 1.75m height to take eighth. In the triple jump, Kevin Lee (Hyde Park, N.Y.) notched a leap of 13.01m for second-place points.
Springfield will compete again next Saturday when it hosts the Massasoit Classic.
