Field Hockey Falls to No. 14 Amherst, 4-0

Springfield, Mass. – October 12, 2023 – The Springfield College field hockey team fell to No. 14 Amherst College, 4-0, in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening at Stagg Field. The Pride fell to 5-8 on the year, while the Mammoths improved to 7-5 overall.

As a team, Amherst out shot Springfield by a 20-1 margin and held an 11-1 advantage in penalty corners. Pride keeper Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) had a strong showing in net for the hosts as she came away seven saves on the night in her third consecutive start.

Amherst got on the board just 4:17 into the contest as Justine Liguori tapped in the ball off an initial attempt by Kate Smith that went off the post for her third goal of the year. Despite conceding a total of ten shots in the first half, that was the lone goal scored by the Mammoths over the opening 30 minutes of play.

Muffie Mazambani scored twice in a span of less than five minutes in the third quarter to push Amherst's advantage to 3-0. Mazambani tallied an unassisted strike at the 32:46 mark before redirecting a pass from Sam Maynard at the 37:01 mark of the game.

Amherst's Kat Mason capped the scoring for the Mammoths with 3:40 to play in the contest as she finished a pass from Kate Smith to account for the 4-0 final.

Springfield will play its second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent on Saturday, October 14 in No. 2 Babson College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Stagg Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
