Springfield, Mass. - October 14, 2023 - The Springfield College field hockey team fell to No. 2 nationally-ranked Babson College, 5-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest held on Stagg Field this afternoon.

Babson, which ran its winning streak to eight, improved to 14-1 overall and to 6-0 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 5-9 overall and to 1-5 in the league standings.

The Beavers scored once in the first and once in the second as the score stood at 2-0 in favor of the visitors at the break. Just 8:36 into the contest Sinead Walsh put Babson ahead as she finished a pass from Camille Marsh, then after a stretch of three penalty corners in a row, Jessica Evans redirected a pass from Berit Sharrow for the 2-0 advantage prior to halftime.

Brianne McGrath ballooned Babson's edge to three, 1:08 into the third quarter. Springfield, however, was able to score a goal of its own prior to the third quarter coming to an end as first-year Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) registered her team-leading 11th goal of the season after driving through the Babson defenders. Gaydos not only leads the team in goals, but ranks fifth in the NEWMAC this year. Walsh and Evans both scored for the Beavers in the fourth less than two minutes apart to account for the 5-1 final.

Babson held a 17-4 advantage in shots and a 12-2 differential in penalty corners. Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) made nine saves on 14 shots this afternoon for the Pride in the cage.

Springfield will return to action on Tuesday, October 17 with a road trip to NEWMAC rival Wheaton College at 7:00 pm.
