Box Score Newport, R.I. – October 31, 2023 – The Springfield College women's volleyball team shut down Salve Regina for a straight-set victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday. The Pride earned the win by the scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-21.
Springfield, which continued to receive votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/TARAFLEX Division III national poll this week, boosted its record to 23-3, 10-0 against conference foes. The Seahawks fell to 11-15, 0-10.
Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) paced Springfield with nine kills and Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) came off the bench to deliver seven kills at a .353 clip. Ally Townsend (Hummelstown, Pa.) had a match-best 23 digs and three aces, while Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) contributed 11 digs and three service winners of her own. Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) concluded the evening with 25 assists.
Consecutive aces from Townsend allowed Springfield to take a 14-8 lead in the opening set, but the hosts would use a 6-2 push to force Springfield into a timeout as its lead was trimmed to 16-14. The Pride would answer with a 6-3 surge of its own, as a kill from Voltz made Salve burn its final timeout of the frame. Keaveney would later put away her third kill of the set to conclude the 25-20 win.
Clinging to a 13-12 lead in the second, Springfield manufactured a 6-1 push fueled by back-to-back aces by Billet and a stuff block from Colosimo. Springfield would run away with a 25-16 triumph as it limited the hosts to a .050 hitting percentage, while getting three kills apiece from Keaveney and Olivia Gentry (Cincinnatti, Ohio).
The third set featured six ties, the last coming at 12-12, before Springfield scored the next four points to force Salve into a timeout. The hosts would get within 22-20, but out of a Springfield timeout, Voltz put a ball away and two Salve attack errors down the stretch allowed Springfield to complete the sweep with a 25-21 win. Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) and Voltz each registered four kills in the stanza to fuel a Pride offense that accounted for 14 kills.
Springfield will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Babson at 1 pm in Blake Arena.
