Women's Soccer Holds Off Coast Guard, 2-0

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 4, 2023 – The Springfield College women's soccer team picked up three important points with tonight's 2-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Coast Guard on Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield upped its record to 6-2-2 overall and to 4-0-0 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard fell to 2-9-0 overall and to 1-3 in the league standings.

After 37 minutes of scoreless action, Springfield scored the game's first goal off a corner kick. Sophomore Natalia Mottura (Scarsdale, N.Y.) drilled the ball from the far side of the field and found the head of classmate Sadie Crozier (North Smithfield, R.I.), who flicked the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 edge.

Mottura picked up her fourth assist of the season, while Crozier registered her second goal of the year and first since the opening game of the season against Thomas College.

Coast Guard peppered the net with shots over the final 20 minutes of play, but Springfield keeper Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) kept the Bears off the board. In the 78th minute, Celia Bertrand ripped an attempt from the top of the box, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and out of play.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of Springfield until there was less than a minute to play when sophomore Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) notched the all-important insurance goal for the Pride. Healy took a long pass from classmate Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Fla.), drove up the middle of the field and planted it into the lower corner of the net securing the 2-0 final.

Springfield held a slim 9-8 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ryan improved to 4-2-2 with five saves between the pipes for the Pride and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. Of her four shutouts this year, Ryan has registered three clean sheets in NEWMAC play (Clark – 2-0, Wheaton, 1-0 and Coast Guard – 2-0).

Springfield will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 7 at 4:00 pm as the Pride travel to No. 14 nationally-ranked MIT for a NEWMAC showdown between the top two teams in the conference standings.
