Boston, Mass. - February 25, 2023 - The Springfield College men's track and field team opened up their championship part of the indoor season in the New England Division III Championships at The Arena at New Balance this weekend.
Springfield scored in six events in the championship en route to 28 points and a top 10 finish as a team.
Joe Wong (Salem, Mass.) highlighted the day as raced to a new school record in the 600 and was crowned the New England Division III Champion in the event. Wong produced a 1:20.80 to topple the previous Springfield record of 1:21.67 that was set by Cormac Tolan in 2020. Wong would also earn All-New England honors in the distance medley relay as he was joined by Aidan Harmer (Hawthorne, N.J.), Thomas Czerwinski (Suffern, N.Y.), and Rece Gobel (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) for a seventh-place time of 10:11.01. Gobel also snagged individual regional honors after his efforts in the 800, as he clocked in eighth at 1:53.81.
Jamie Cocca (Sand Lake, N.Y.) would rack up points for the Pride at the weight throw, as he finished sixth, tossing for 16.31m, and would throw the shot a sixth-place distance of 14.89m, en route to a pair of all-region honors. In the long jump, Colby Wilson (Tewksbury, Mass.) acheived all-region recognition following an eighth-place 6.71m leap.
Springfield also had a pair of All-New England performances in the 200 as Evan Weber (Purchase, N.Y.) placed fourth with a 21.83, while Seth Regan (Killingworth, Conn.) took seventh with a 21.98 time.
Additionally, Czerwinski also put forth a solid time at the 400m dash, as he would come across the line at 51.04. Christopher Vayda (Southampton. Mass.) completed the 5,000 in 15:05.56, followed by teammate John DeRosa's (Shelton, Conn.) time of 15:12.89. Kevin Lee (Hyde Park, N.Y.) produced the best result at the triple jump, as he posted a mark of 13.19m. At the pole vault, Alex McKenney (Ossining, N.Y.) had Pride's best finish, as he went over the bar at 4.19m.
