PERFECT! DeRosa Tosses Perfect Game En Route to Softball Sweep Over Westfield State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Springfield, Mass. – April 19, 2023 – Springfield College first-year Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) threw the second known perfect game in program history this afternoon to cap a two-game non-conference sweep of Westfield State University on Diane L. Potter Field. The Pride won game one, 5-2, and game two, 8-0, in five innings.

DeRosa joined the ranks of Nan Duga (2001) to throw perfect games for the Pride. The first-year also completed the fifth no-hitter for Springfield College since 2012 and second against Westfield State in four seasons. Springfield, which picked up two big wins today against in-region foe Westfield State, improved to 27-5 on the year, while the visiting Owls dropped to 19-9.

Game One:

Pride starter Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.), who after allowing two runs over the first two innings, surrendered just three hits over the final five frames to improve to 10-2 in the circle. Kane struck out a career-high 12 batters in the opener, the most in a single game for Springfield since Ashley Pugliese (Huntington Station, N.Y.) registered 13 punchouts against Wheaton College in 2021.

Both teams traded runs over the first two innings as Springfield scored on a sacrifice fly by Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) and an RBI single by Mackenzie Doyle (Glocester, R.I). The score remained the same until there were two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Maggie Britt (Bridgeport, Conn.) singled and moved to second before she scored on a knock to center by DeRosa. The Pride added a pair of insurance runs on a two run double by Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) before the side was retired.

Westfield state recorded two hits in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but Kane got Quill to ground out to second and secured the 5-2 game one win for Springfield.

Game Two:

Springfield quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first in game two and put up a four spot on a fielder's choice, a two-run double by Breannah McCann (San Diego, Calif.) and a sac fly by Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.). Those were all the runs the Pride needed as DeRosa pitched the second perfect game in Springfield history.

In five innings in the circle, DeRosa threw just 47 pitches and struck out two en route to the historic win. DeRosa pitched the fifth no-hitter for the Pride since 2012 as previously Springfield accomplished the feat against Westfield State (April 17, 2019), Smith (April 4, 2013), Clark (March 24, 2012) and MCLA (April 10, 2012).

Up 5-0 going into the bottom of the fifth after DeRosa retired her 15th consecutive batter, Olsen ripped an infield single, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a knock by Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.). A single by Doyle followed by a walk by DeRosa brought Pecchia to the plate with the winning runs on base. Pecchia roped a double to left center as Doyle and Serricchio came around to score ending the game 8-0 in favor of Springfield after five innings.

Springfield will travel to Coast Guard for an important NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday, April 21 at 3:00 pm.
