Cocca & Brown Earn All-Conference Honors for Men's Track & Field on Day One of NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, Mass. – April 29, 2023 – Springfield College senior Jamie Cocca (Sand Lake, N.Y.) and junior Travis Brown (Hartford, Conn.) claimed Second Team All-Conference honors in the hammer throw and javelin throw, respectively, to open competition at the 2023 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Outdoor Championships at MIT this afternoon.

Through one day at the meet, the Springfield men's track and field team sits in second place with 35 points only behind host MIT (82 points).

Cocca claimed Second Team All-Conference honors in the hammer throw with a best mark of 46.16m (151 feet, 5 inches). Behind Cocca was Billy Albano (Longmeadow, Mass.) in seventh place with a toss of 38.83m (127 feet, 5 inches). Brown took home Second Team All-Conference accolades in the javelin throw with a best mark of 51.52m (169 feet), while Daniel Criscio (Seymour, Conn.) placed fifth with a mark of 50.10m (164 feet, 4 inches).

In a highly competitive 10,000-meter run, Christopher Vayda (Southampton, Mass.) crossed the line in third place overall just 1.24-seconds behind Brookman from MIT.

The Pride won all three prelim heats of the 100-meter dash and will have four entries in the championship finals tomorrow including Michael Scott (Shoreview, Minn.) – 10.59, Seth Regan (Killingworth, Conn.) – 10.69, Anthony Penta (Southington, Conn.) – 10.77 and Evan Weber (Purchase, N.Y.) – 10.80. David Cataloni (Attleboro, Mass.) also qualified for the championship finals of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.20-seconds.

Scott's run of 10.59-seconds, ranks him 27th nationally this season.

Colby Wilson (Tewksbury, Mass.) had the best finish for Springfield in the long jump as he posted a best mark of 6.57m (21 feet, 6.75 inches) for fourth place overall. Behind Wilson was Kevin Lee (Hyde Park, N.Y.) in eighth (6.30m) and Brad Plamondon (Woonsocket, R.I.) in ninth (6.02m).

Alex McKenney (Ossining, N.Y.) had the best finish for the Pride in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.85m (12 feet, 7.50 inches) for eighth place.

Springfield will return to MIT for day two of the 2023 NEWMAC Outdoor Championships tomorrow beginning at 10:30 am.
