Nashua, N.H. – January 27, 2024 – The Springfield College men's volleyball team swept host Rivier on Saturday night by the set scores of 25-19, 27-25, 25-20.
Springfield, which was ranked sixth in the country in the most recent AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, pushed its record to 4-1 on the year.
Sam Levinson (La Grange, Ill.) put together the best outing of his young career as he erupted for 16 kills at a .519 clip, while
Evan Costley (Simi Valley, Calif.) added nine kills of his own on the pin at a .500 hitting percentage.
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.) led the Pride to a .347 team hitting percentage and registered a team-best five digs and four blocks to go along with 32 helpers and
Chris Rouleau (Bay Shore, N.Y.) chipped in six kills and four blocks.
Leading 8-6 in the first, Levinson would side out with a kill to kickstart a 7-4 push that allowed the Pride to gain a 15-10 lead on a stuff block by Mulvaney and Rouleau. After the hosts pulled within 16-13, Springfield would call a timeout and get two kills from both Costley and Levinson to have their lead balloon to 20-13. The Raiders eighth attack error of the set would allow Springfield to earn the 25-19 win.
The Pride raced out to a 7-3 lead on a kill by Costley, only to have the Raiders battle their way back to within 15-14. Springfield would put together a 6-2 push which featured two kills from
Ethan Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) before another kill from Levinson would give the Pride set point at 24-21. However, three-straight miscues by the Pride knotted things up at 24-24, and the teams would trade points until Rivier committed back-to-back errors for the 27-25 win.
The third set went back and forth before Springfield broke open a 13-12 game with four-straight points that were fueled by three attack errors by the Raiders. The hosts would get within 19-17 on an ace, but out of a Springfield timeout, Levinson thumped a kill that would kick start 5-0 run before Rouleau hammered a ball in system to complete the three-set sweep.
Springfield returns home to take on local-foe Elms on Monday evening at 7 pm.
