South Hadley, Mass. – January 27, 2024 – The Springfield College women's basketball team jumped out to a 22-0 lead after the first quarter and eased its way to a 73-29 victory at Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) outing on Wednesday night.
Springfield listed its record to 16-4, 5-1 in conference play, while Mount Holyoke dropped to 2-18, 0-6.
Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) led all scorers with 12 points and
Rachel Vinton (Holden, Mass.) registered 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Lindsey Laughlan (Ellington, Conn.) connected for 11 points off the bench and
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) tacked on 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Springfield racked up 20 points off 21 MHC turnovers and held a 40-12 advantage on points in the paint.
Leary leaked out in transition of a great look from Vinton to put Springfield ahead 12-0 just over four minutes into the contest as the hosts called timeout. Springfield would shoot 9-of-17 from the field in the opening 10 minutes of play to earn a 22-0 lead as Mount Holyoke was unsuccessful on its 13 field goal attempts while turning the ball over eight times.
Finney banged a pair of threes in the second quarter as the visitors outscored the Lyons by a 19-5 margin in the stanza.
Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) knocked down a jumper in the paint to give Springfield its largest first-half lead at 41-3 with under two minutes left on the clock.
The Pride would extend its lead to 59-15 in the third on a jumper by Laughlan and a bucket from
Jackie Okula (Seymour, Conn.) with 2:11 left in regulation allowed Springfield to gain its largest lead of the game at 73-27.
On Saturday, Springfield hosts WPI at 3 pm.
