Springfield, Mass. – October 10, 2024 – The Springfield College women's volleyball squad used a complete team effort to sweep visiting Amherst on Thursday night in non-conference play in Blake Arena by the scores of 28-26, 25-12, 25-21.
The Pride moved to 11-4 with the triumph while the Mammoths dropped to 10-5.
Maeve Voltz (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led all players with 11 kills which came at a .556 hitting percentage as she also added a team-best four blocks.
Natalie Billet (Commack, N.Y.) turned in eight kills and eight digs and
Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) notched seven kills and three blocks.
Kristen DeLorenzo (Syracuse, N.Y.) ended the evening with 15 digs and reached the 1,000 career dig plateau midway through the opening frame.
Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) had 21 of the Pride's 38 assists and also registered nine digs and three aces.
Tied up at 13 in the first set, Springfield rattled off a four-point run, highlighted by
Riley Donahue (South Windsor, Conn.) thumping a ball down the line in transition. Donahue would later give the Pride set point at 24-22 when she muscled a ball through the Amherst block. However, the visitors would fight off a total of four set points before Donahue connected on her fifth kill of the night and
Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) closed for a stuff block to complete the 28-26 win.
After going down 3-1 to begin the second set, Springfield rattled off the next six points, with Voltz ripping a hard angle shot in transition to force Amherst into a timeout at 7-3. The Pride's advantage would grow to 20-8 following back-to-back kills from Billet and Springfield would coast to a 25-12 win. Springfield totaled 16 kills in the stanza, including five from Voltz, while limiting the visitors to a -.036 hitting percentage.
The third set featured 11 ties as Springfield burned its second timeout down 17-15 following a block from Amherst. Out of the break, the Pride would manufacture a 6-1 push, with Voltz and Colosimo teaming up for a block at 21-18. Amherst would get no closer than two points before
Megan Kirtyan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) would force the middle in transition and
Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) hammered the match-sealing kill at 25-21.
Springfield will continue non-conference play this weekend when it travels to Pennsylvania for a tri-match with Catholic and Scranton.
