Boston, Mass. – October 19, 2024 – Emerson College used two second half goals to defeat the Springfield College women's soccer team in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
Emerson pushed to 4-5-5 overall and to 3-2-2 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dipped to 6-3-4, 3-2-2.
In the first half Springfield forced Emerson keeper Amara Schaub to make four saves including two in the opening 20 minutes of play off the feet of
Molly Baxter (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and
Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) as the stanza ended scoreless.
After just nine combined shots between the two clubs in the first half, Emerson scored just 23-seconds in the second stanza when Linae Bezdek potted her third goal of the year off a feed by Maddie Khaw.
Just 2:05 later, Springfield found the equalizer when
Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) finished a pass from
Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) knotting the game at one with still 42 minutes to play. Walker nearly gave Springfield a 2-1 lead, but Schaub stopped the attempt leading to Emerson's go ahead goal just 30-seconds later. Zoe Simons found Marissa Krenn for the Lions' game winning tally.
Springfield's final attempt at a draw came in the 78th minute by
Kayla McGrath (North Adams, Mass.), but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and out of play.
In net,
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made five saves for Springfield, while Schaub stopped the ball seven times for the homestanding Lions.
Springfield will travel to WPI on Wednesday, October 23 at 4:00 pm for another NEWMAC showdown.
