New London, Conn. - October 2, 2024 - The Springfield College field hockey team could not recover from surrendering a pair of goals in the opening six minutes of the contest as it was defeated by host Connecticut College, 4-1, in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.
The Camels improved to 3-5 with the victory while Springfield's record now stands at 3-7 this season.
Connecticut College set the tone early in the contest, finding the back of the cage twice in the first 5:44 of the contest before Springfield was able to cut the lead in half with just 34 seconds remaining in the opening quarter after
Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) tucked in a shot off a feed from
Emma McLaughlin (Norwalk, Conn.).
However, the Camels used another pair of quick strikes to begin the second quarter that came only 31 seconds apart to account for all the game's scoring as they opened up a 4-1 advantage at the 17:06 mark.
Neilee Hess (Franklin, Mass.) came off the bench to register 11 saves for Springfield as she held the hosts off the scoreboard for the final 42-plus minutes of the night. Connecticut College owned a 21-9 advantage in shots and a slight 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Anna Beck (Attleboro, Mass.) totaled a team-best three shots for the Pride.
Springfield returns to conference play on Saturday and hosts WPI on Stagg Field at 4 pm.
