Riverdale, N.Y. – October 2, 2024 – The Springfield College men's soccer team fell to the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 2-1, in the final minute of action in tonight's non-conference tilt at the Athletic Field at Marillac.
Mount Saint Vincent improved to 7-3-2 overall, while Springfield dipped to 3-5-1 on the season.
The homestanding Dolphins held decisive advantages in both shots (19-7) and corner kicks (6-2), but the match was tied for nearly 45 minutes of play until there was less than one minute remaining on the clock.
Mount Saint Vincent scored just 6:17 into the contest on a strike by Amos Bignotti, who buried the ball into corner of the net from inside the box. It appeared that the hosts would take that 1-0 edge into the break, but
Connor Policarpio (Bristol, Conn.) found the equalizer with 47-seconds left in the opening stanza.
Policarpio, who registered his fifth goal of the season, was fed the ball by
Brandon Trent (Commack, N.Y.) deep in the Springfield end and then received it at midfield before bolting past the defenders for the 1-on-1 goal. Policarpio now has the most goals in a season for the Pride since 2021 with five.
Unfortunately, with 26 seconds remaining in the game, Mount Saint Vincent converted the game-winning goal off a corner kick. Trevor Pegg headed the ball into the right side of the net off the boot from Donovan Speer to account for the 2-1 non-conference final.
Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) made a season-high eight saves for Springfield in the setback.
Springfield will travel to the United States Coast Guard Academy for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown on Saturday, October 5 at 12:00 pm.
