Babson Park, Mass. – October 30, 2024 – The Springfield College women's soccer team fell to Babson College, 3-2, in the final minutes of regulation this afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson improved to 7-5-5 overall and to 5-2-3 (18 points) in NEWMAC play, while Springfield fell to 8-4-4, 5-3-2 (17 points).
Graduate student
Olivia Raucci (Schenectady, N.Y.) and
Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) both potted goals for Springfield in this afternoon's setback. Raucci's was her fifth of the fall, which ranks tied for second on the team, while Healy registered her third of the campaign. Healy has now tallied at least a point in six of the last eight matches for the Pride dating back to October 5 against Wheaton (3 goals – 4 assists – 10 points).
Graduate students
Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) and
Gabby Scott (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) both tallied assists today. Walker's assist was her sixth helper of the season and Scott's was her third of the year. Walker's six assists rank second most in the league this fall.
In the tightly contested match that saw Springfield stage a comeback from two goals down, the Pride held a 14-11 edge in shots, while both Babson and the Pride had four cornerkicks a piece.
Elisa Diletizia put Babson on the board just 1:01 into the match as she drilled the ball into the net from 10-yards out. Then 12 minutes later, Laura Lukowicz registered her third goal of the fall off a corner kick from Jordyn Ferrantino to double the Beavers advantage early in the match.
Springfield quickly answered as Healy cut Babson's lead in half in the 20th minute after finishing a cross from Walker as the score stood at 2-1 in favor of the hosts at the break.
With under six to play, Springfield was awarded a corner kick looking to equalize. The ball was lifted into the box where Scott's original shot hit off the crossbar. It then landed at the foot of Raucci, who kicked it past the Babson keeper to even the match at two.
But less than two minutes later, Diletizia ripped a shot from 30 yards out off a short pass from Mack Feeney for the game winner. Babson's chance came off a short goal kick that fell right to Feeney near midfield.
Senior
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made five saves for Springfield in the setback.
Springfield will return home to face Smith College in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
