Springfield, Mass. – October 5, 2024 – Despite getting an early goal, the Springfield College women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw at home on Saturday against Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Brock-Affleck Field.
Springfield and Wheaton came into today's match ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region II poll. The Pride moved to 4-1-4, 1-0-2, while the Lyons saw their record go to 4-3-4, 0-1-2.
First-year
Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) accounted for Springfield's offense today with her fourth goal of the fall, which leads the team and ranks third in the NEWMAC. Her ten points this year also rank third in the conference.
Salmon scored just 17-seconds into the match as she took the ball off a pair of one touch passes from
Natalia Mottura (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and
Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) and ripped her fourth goal of the year into the back of the net. Her goal today ranks 10th fastest in NCAA Division III women's soccer history in the category of quickest goal scored to open a contest.
The Pride held the 1-0 edge until late in the match when Lauren Ditullio found the equalizer in the 75th minute. After the ball took a few bounces in the box Maya Thomas fed the ball to Ditullio, who potted her first collegiate goal for the visiting Lyons.
Despite holding a decisive 23-6 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks, both squads settled for one point in the NEWMAC standings with the draw.
In net,
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made a trio of saves for Springfield, while Wheaton keeper Patricia Bandrup stopped 13 shots.
Springfield will travel to Coast Guard on Wednesday, October 9 for a NEWMAC tilt at 7:00 pm.
