Men's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Decision at Amherst

Amherst, Mass. – November 19, 2024 – The Springfield College men's basketball team dropped a 78-49 non-conference decision to Amherst College on the road on Tuesday evening in LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst improved to 2-1 on the year, while Springfield dropped to 1-4.

Springfield was once again led by Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) as he posted 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting to go along with four boards in the setback. Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with ten points and a team-best ten rebounds and two assists. Amherst was guided by CJ Mitchell who posted 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor which included seven three point buckets.
 
Springfield took an early 9-2 advantage thanks to six points from Livingston over the first 3:41 of tonight's game, but Amherst quickly responded and just four minutes later gained its first lead of the game at 12-11 following a layup from Ryker Vance.

Amherst outscored Springfield by a 40-13 margin over the final 15:57 of the first half for a 42-22 lead at the break. Mitchell led the charge for the Mammoths scoring 14 of the hosts 40 points in the stretch – a stretch that saw Amherst shoot 55-percent from the floor and 50-percent from three point range. Over the same stretch, Springfield made just six baskets and received eight points from Flynn.

Amherst maintained its advantage in the second and led by 20+ points the rest of the way outscoring Springfield, 37-26, in the stanza en route to the 78-49 final.
 
Amherst's defense was dominant on the glass out-rebounding Springfield by a 50-29 margin and registered seven blocks on the night. In addition, the Mammoths posted a 36-20 advantage on points in the pant.
 
For the game, Amherst shot 46.9-percent from the floor which featured ten made three point baskets. Springfield shot just 29.1-percent from the floor and knocked down 12 shots at the free throw line. 

Springfield will travel to Division I Wagner College for an exhibition matchup on Saturday, November 23 at 4:00 pm.
