Newport, R.I. – November 2, 2024 – The Springfield College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision on the road at Salve Regina University in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season finale for both teams this afternoon.
Salve Regina improved to 9-7-3 (4-1-3 NEWMAC) and secured the second seed in next week's NEWMAC Championship Tournament, while Springfield fell to 6-8-3, 3-3-2 NEWMAC and will be the fifth seed in the playoffs on Tuesday.
It was a tightly contested match as Salve Regina held a slim 15-14 edge in shots, while both teams took five corner kicks over the 90 minute contest. In net, Springfield keeper
Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) made a trio of saves.
Springfield struck first in the 24th minute as
Cole Sampson (Hingham, Mass.) buried a penalty kick – his third goal of the fall – for the 1-0 edge. The score remained the same until early in the second when Danny Bond ripped an unassisted shot for the equalizer in the 54th minute.
In the second, the Pride had a number of opportunities including a pair of shots by
Connor Policarpio (Bristol, Conn.) that were stopped by Adonis Santiago. Ethan David potted what proved to be the game winning goal for the Seahawks in the 71st minute off a feed from Evan Arpin.
Springfield will travel to MIT for the NEWMAC quarterfinals on Tuesday at a time to be determined early next week.
