Springfield, Mass. – November 5, 2024 – The second-seeded Springfield College women's soccer team fell to seventh-seeded WPI, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament on Tuesday evening on Brock-Affleck Field.
WPI improved to 9-6-4 and will head to sixth-seeded Emerson College for the semifinal round on Thursday evening, while Springfield dropped to 9-5-4 and will wait word of a bid to the ECAC Tournament next Monday.
The visiting Engineers scored just 38-seconds into the game when Maeve Steckley headed the ball into the net off a corner kick from Olivia Toolin. WPI took the 1-0 edge into the break after both teams combined for just seven shots in the first, 5-2 in favor of the Engineers.
Then in the 61st minute, Lexi Carim doubled WPI's advantage as she finished a bouncing ball in the box off a pass from Mia Gilmore for the 2-0 lead before Lily Guiliano pushed WPI's third goal of the night into the net in the 73rd minute.
Springfield forced WPI keeper Lili Hellerman to make just one save over the course of the match, which came in the second half off the foot of
Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.) in the 70th minute. Pride keeper
Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made four stops in the playoff matchup.
This was the first NEWMAC Tournament contest between Springfield and WPI since November 5, 2016.
