Auburndale, Fla. – March 14, 2024 – The Springfield College baseball team capped its trip to Florida with a thrilling 5-4 win over St. Joseph's College of Maine on Thursday under the lights at the Lake Myrtle Complex.
Springfield returns home to Massachusetts with a 6-6 record and is scheduled to play Elms College in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, March 17 at noon.
Offensively,
Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) powered Springfield with two hits and two RBI in the win.
Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.),
Andrew Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) and
Adam Crocker (Windsor, Nova Scotia) all also posted a pair of hits for the Pride.
Matthew Robinson (Fairfield, Conn.) earned the win for the Pride as he tossed the final three frames without surrendering a hit.
St. Joseph's threatened to score in the bottom of the first, but back-to-back outfield assists
from Luke DiMauro (Haddam, Conn.) gunned the runners down at the plate as the game remained scoreless through one. It was Gundlah, who gave the Monks the 1-0 edge in the second, however, with a solo shot to left field. A sacrifice fly in the second, a second solo homer in the third and a passed ball extended St. Joseph's edge to 4-0 midway through the game.
Michael Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) began the sixth with a walk before he came around with Springfield's first run of the contest on an RBI double by Sorgi before the Pride quickly knotted the game at 4-4 in the very next frame. Sweet opened the seventh with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a knock by Crocker and scored on a sac fly by
Joseph Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.). A ground out by Barrett plated Crocker and an RBI double scored Lepere for the 4-4- tie.
Robinson entered the game and set the Monks down 1-2-3 in both the seventh and the eighth to set up Springfield's offense in the top of the ninth. Crocker began the final inning with a walk and was lifted for a pinch runner.
Adam Fine (Wynnewood, Pa.) stole second, advanced to third on a hit by Lepere and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Barrett. Robinson returned to the bump and allowed the tying and winning runs to reach base, but got the final out of the game to secure the 5-4 victory for Springfield.
