Hartford, Conn. - March 20, 2024 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team was clipped by No. 13 Trinity, 10-9, on Wednesday night in a non-conference contest at Sheppard Field.
Springfield fell to 5-2 on the year while the Bantams, who were 13th in this week's IWLCA National Poll, improved to 4-1.
Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) tallied a goal and four assists while classmate
Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) registered a team-best four goals and tacked on an assist.
Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) snagged seven ground balls and caused three turnovers and
Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) produced seven stops.
The Johnson to Newton connection was unstoppable to start the contest as the duo produced three-straight goals in the opening five-plus minutes to give the Pride an early 3-0 cushion. Over the next ten-plus minutes, Trinity would respond with three goals of their own to tie up the game with 14:17 left in the first half. That would be the first of five occasions that the teams would be tied up, the last of which came following goals just 31 seconds apart at 7-7 with 9:26 on the clock in the third.
Trinity would hold Springfield scoreless for the next 23 minutes and score three goals of their own to gain their largest lead of the game at 10-7 at the 9:26 mark of the fourth. Springfield would make one final push, getting two goals from Lalancette in the final two minutes to make it a one-goal game, but the Bantams were able to win the final draw of the game to seal the non-conference win.
Trinity finished the game with 26-18 advantage in shots as their high-pressure defense forced Springfield into 21 turnovers.
On Saturday, Springfield will travel to face Salve Regina in a conference game at 12 pm.
