Women's Lacrosse Breaks Scoring Record in 26-4 NEWMAC Win at Salve Regina

Middletown, RI – March 23, 2024 – Springfield College powered past Salve Regina University, 26-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse contest this afternoon on the road.

Springfield improved to 6-2 overall and to 2-0 in NEWMAC play, while Salve Regina moved to 7-2, 1-1.

Springfield's 26 goals – which were tallied by 15 different student-athletes – accounted for a new team single game team record. The previous high was 24, which came against Wellesley in a 24-0 victory during the 2022 season.

Springfield was paced by a four goal effort by Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.), while Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) posted three goals and an assist for four points. Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.), Arielle Johnson (Pomfret, Conn.), Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine), Molly Novak (Poughquag, N.Y.), Liz Neri (Farmington, Conn.) and Holly Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) all registered two goals apiece. Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) led the Pride with four assists and five total points on the day, while Roy paced Springfield with seven draw controls in the win.

As a team, Springfield held a 42-15 advantage in shots, went 15-for-15 on clearing attempts, scooped up 15 ground balls, won 25 of 31 draw controls and went 3-for-5 on free position shots.

Taylor scored Springfield's first goal of the game just 22 seconds into the contest, before Mazzi, L. Johnson and A. Johnson all scored within the first two minutes for the early 4-0 advantage. The Pride accumulated ten goals in the first quarter and six in the second for a 16-2 margin at the break.

Salve Regina scored the opening two goals of the second half, but from that point on Springfield held the Seahawks scoreless and tallied ten goals of its own en route to the 26-4 NEWMAC victory.

In goal, Springfield keeper Colleen Browne (Westford, Mass.) made five saves in the win.

Springfield will host Smith College in NEWMAC action on Wednesday, March 27 at 6:00 pm.
