Women's Lacrosse Defeats Smith, 17-8

Springfield, Mass. – March 27, 2024 – Springfield College women's lacrosse picked up a 17-8 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on a rainy Wednesday evening on Stagg Field.

Springfield's record pushed to 7-2 overall and to 3-0 in NEWMAC play, while Smith dropped to 4-6, 1-1.

The Pride were paced offensively by Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), who registered four goals on the night. Lily Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) chipped in with a hat trick and an assist for four points, while Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.), Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.), Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) all contributed two goals apiece for Springfield.

Roy added six draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover to her stat line, while Andresen and Arielle Johnson (Pomfret, Conn.) led the Pride with three ground balls apiece. In net, Colleen Browne (Westford, Mass.) earned the win with seven stops for Springfield.

As a team, Springfield held a 36-21 advantage in shots, a 23-18 differential in ground balls, won 16-of-28 draw controls and went 18-for-22 in transition.

Springfield used four different goal scorers over the opening 11:38 of the game to take an early 4-0 lead over Smith. Both Lalancette and Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) converted unassisted strikes on the man-advantage over the run. Smith scored twice in less than a minute, but Andresen found the net for the second time of the quarter as Springfield held a 5-2 edge after one.

The Pride outscored Smith, 7-2, in the second en route to a 12-4 lead at the break and 4-0 in the third period as Springfield gained a 16-4 advantage through 45 minutes of play. Andresen completed the hat trick with two goals in under 50-seconds midway through the second, while Johnson and Lalancentte tallied strikes on the man-advantage in the second quarter.
Vey posted back-to-back strikes late in the third and Ronai notched her second goal of the contest midway through the fourth en route to the 17-8 NEWMAC win.

In just three NEWMAC contests this spring, the Pride have combined for 62 goals – nearly half of their output from the entirety of their schedule in 2024. In those three conference games, Springfield has held its opponents to just 17 goals.

Springfield will host Clark University in NEWMAC play on Friday evening at 6:00 pm.
