Weymouth, Mass. – March 23, 2024 – The Springfield College men's tennis team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a 7-2 win over Emerson College tonight at the Weymouth Club.
Springfield is now 2-4 overall and 1-0 in NEWMAC play, while Emerson is 3-7, 0-2.
Springfield took a 2-1 lead out of doubles play as
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) and
Marc Villanueva Abad (Morelia, Mexico) earned an 8-3 win at No. 1, while
Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall, Conn.) and
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) earned an 8-1 decision at No. 3.
In singles play, Kimoto won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1, Villanueva Abad won 6-5, 6-7, 11-9 at No. 2,
Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4,
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 and Taub won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. It was Villanueva Abad who registered the match clinching point for the Pride as they begin the year 1-0 in conference play.
Springfield will host Roger Williams University in non-conference action on Tuesday, March 26 at 3:30 pm.
