Westfield, Mass. – April 10, 2024 – Powered by a career-high five goals from junior Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's lacrosse team earned a 13-8 non-conference win over Westfield State University on the road on Wednesday night.

Springfield, now winners of six straight games, improved to 11-2 overall, while Westfield State dipped to 7-5.

In addition to Andresen's five goals, Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) chipped in with two goals of her own, while Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.), Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.), Arielle Johnson (Pomfret, Conn.), Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine), Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) all scored once tonight for the Pride. Lily Johnson paced Springfield with five draw controls, Andresen and Lalancette led the Pride with three ground balls each and Samantha Van Horn (South Windsor, Conn.) registered a pair of caused turnovers.

In net for Springfield, Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) posted a season-best 13 saves on 28 shots for her seventh win of the 2024 campaign.

Springfield scored the first four goals of tonight's contest over the opening 11 minutes. Andresen registered two of her five goals over the opening stretch at the 13:06 and 5:15 marks, while Lalancette and Vey added solo unassisted goals for the 4-0 advantage. After Megan Bailey got the Owls on the board, Newton found the back of the net off a feed by Roy for a 5-1 score after one.

Bailey began the scoring for Westfield State on the man-advantage just 41-seconds into the second period and completed the hat trick less than a minute later and Kiley Hafensteiner tallied a marker as the Owls cut their deficit one at 5-4.

Newton ended the Westfield run and began a stretch of four straight goals – a run that pushed into the third quarter to up Springfield's lead to five at 9-4. Newton, Roy and Lily Johnson all scored on unassisted tallies prior to halftime, while Andresen notched her third goal of the game off a pass from Vey early in the third.

Westfield State got two goals back late in the third and two more late in the fourth, but Springfield outscored the Owls, 4-2, over the final 15 minutes of the game en route to the 13-8 win. Andresen scored twice in the fourth, while Arielle Johnson and Taylor capped the scoring for the Pride over the final six minutes of the game.

Springfield held a 32-38 edge in shots, while Westfield posted a 19-16 edge in ground balls and both teams won 12 draw controls apiece. The Pride went 20-for-24 in transition and scored twice on free-position attempts.

The Pride will welcome Wellesley College to Springfield for a NEWMAC contest on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 pm. Prior to the game, Springfield will honor its senior class.
