New London, Conn. - April 13, 2024 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team netted eight goals in the third quarter to propel themselves to a 15-11 victory at Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tilt on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride has now strung together four-straight wins to move to 4-8 on the year, including 3-2 in conference play.
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) was sensational in delivering four goals and two assists while
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) added four goals of his own.Â
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) chipped in three goals and an assists,
Gavin Carzello (Westfield, Mass.) snagged seven ground balls, andÂ
Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 16-for-27 on face-offs. Â
Springfield raced out to a 3-0 lead as
Ryan McDonald (Carmel, N.Y.), Tierney, and
Gage Sperlonga (Feeding Hills, Mass.) gave the visitors an early advantage with just over five minutes left in the first.
Nicholas Gorman (Valhalla, N.Y.) would score inside the opening minute of the second quarter to make it a 4-1 game, only to have the hosts pump in the next four goals to take their only lead of the game with 4:08 to play. Tierney would even things up at 2:08 before Soldo scored at the horn to put the Pride back on top, 6-5, at the half.
Springfield pumped in three goals in the first 56 seconds of the third quarter and have its lead balloon to 14-6 on a strike from
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) at 5:39. All four of Degan's goals in the game would come in the first 4:41 of second half as Springfield would pull away for its third conference win of the year.
Coast Guard would make one last push, getting the first three goals of the fourth to make it a three-goal game, but Soldo would bury his fourth of the afternoon with 1:58 on the clock to seal the win.Â
On Wednesday, Springfield will play Wesleyan in its non-conference finale.
