Middletown, Conn. - April 17, 2024 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team wrapped up non-conference play as it was topped by nationally-ranked Wesleyan, 21-8, on Wednesday afternoon.
Springfield had their four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 4-9 on the year. Today's contest marked the sixth time this season that Springfield had squared off with a nationally-ranked opponent as Wesleyan entered the game ranked 14th in the country.Â
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) paced the Pride with three goals and two assists, while
Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) handed out three helpers and
Jackson Lane (Shrewsbury, Mass.) picked up a team-best five ground balls.
Wesleyan ended the afternoon with a 58-27 edge in shots as the Pride turned the ball over 22 times in the setback. Â
Springfield jumped on the board just 20 seconds into the game when
Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) connected with Degnan for a strike. The hosts would respond with the next three goals before
Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) found the back of the cage on an unassisted rip at 6:25 to make it a one-goal game. However, Wesleyan would rattle off 10-unanswered goals to have their lead balloon to 13-2 with 7:09 remaining in the first half.Â
Gage Sperlonga (Feeding, Hills, Mass.) would open up the second half with a man-up goal at 13:35 to make it a 13-4 game, only to have the Cardinals produce an 5-1 scoring spurt over the next eight-plus minutes to extend an 18-5 cushion as they would pull away for the win.Â
On Saturday, Springfield will host Salve Regina at 12 pm.
