Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Degnan Powers Men's Lacrosse Past Salve Regina, 17-8

Springfield, Mass. – April 20, 2024 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team benefitted from a nine-point outing by Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) to storm past visiting Salve Regina, 17-8, on Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash.

Springfield moved to 5-9, 4-2 in conference play and the Seahawks dropped to 4-8, 3-3.

Degnan pumped in eight goals to go along with an assist as he equaled the goal-scoring output from Salve Regina, while Bryan Strensrud (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) found the back of the cage four times and Kevin Tierney (Glastonbury, Conn.) handed out five assists of his own.  Vincent Scialdone (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 20-of-28 on face-offs and picked up 10 ground balls and Kaden Quirk (Nahant, Mass.) was credited with 13 saves in the victory.

Springfield raced out to a 3-0 lead with 5:17 left in the first quarter after Stensrud and Degnan scored just eight seconds apart.  Salve would respond with their first goal of the game under a minute later, only to have Stensrud give the Pride a 4-1 edge after 15 minutes of play with his second of the game with 14 ticks on the clock.

Liam Cooney bounced home a man-up strike 21 seconds into the second half but Degan would get free for a pair of goals under two minutes apart to push the Pride's advantage to 6-2 at the 11:33 mark.  Salve would trim the hosts lead to 6-3 with a goal at 8:30 before Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) fed Mason Nocito (Mahopac, N.Y.) inside for a rebound goal after his initial shot rang off the post as Springfield went into the half with a 7-3 cushion.

The teams each scored inside the opening minute of the third quater before Springfield would score the final four goals of the fourth, highlighted by Nocito backing his defender down in the final seconds and bouncing in a shot into the top corner to make it a 12-4 game.

The visitors opened up the fourth quarter with three-consecutive goals, but the Pride would outscore the Seahawks by a 5-1 margin in the final 6:42 of regulation to cruise to the 17-8 win.

The Pride closes out the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton.
