Worcester, Mass. – April 14, 2024 – The Springfield College softball team split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at WPI this afternoon in a make-up of Friday's scheduled twinbill. Springfield won game one, 5-3, but WPI stormed back to take the nightcap, 10-3.
Springfield is now 19-4-1 overall and 8-2 in NEWMAC play, while WPI sits at 9-10-1, 4-4. Springfield will travel to Western New England University for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16 beginning at 3:00 pm

Game One: Springfield 5, WPI 3
Springfield hit three home runs in game one and held off a rally by WPI in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win by a 5-3 final. Springfield's three home runs in game one, are the most in a game for the Pride since they hit four at Smith on April 23, 2019.
After a lead-off walk by
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) who then moved to second on a sacrifice fly, Springfield took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer to center by
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.). Gendron's round tripper was her first of the season and sixth of her career. In the top of the second,
Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) led off the frame with a single to left
before Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) launched her first home run of the year and second of her career over the fence in left for the 4-1 advantage.
With the score the same in the top of the sixth,
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) led off the inning with a solo shot over the fence in left center – her first collegiate home run - to push Springfield's lead to 5-1.
WPI rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a single up the middle by Callie Allison and a sacrifice fly by Kallie Case, but DeRosa got Sydney Russell to strike out swinging to end the game, 5-3.
DeRosa improved to 10-2 in the circle with her ninth complete game of the year as she scattered seven hits, allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out three in the opener.
In addition to Springfield's three round trippers in the game,
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with a walk.
Game Two: WPI 11, Springfield 3 (Six Innings)
Springfield tallied single runs in the first and the second on a sacrifice fly and RBI double by
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), but WPI exploded for six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the second for a 6-2 advantage.
Back-to-back singles opened the second before Meg Sherwood ripped an RBI double for WPI's first run. Russell came to the plate a hit the ball to knocked the ball to center resulting in an inside the park three-run home run. An RBI double by Riley O'Brien and a base hit by Allison capped the six run frame for the Engineers.
Springfield was held without another run until the top of the fifth when Gendron registered her third RBI of the day on a base hit to left plating
Lyndsay Donston (South Windsor, Conn.). WPI, which took advantage of a pair of Pride errors, immediately responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth resulting in a 10-3 score. Shaina Lazarus hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by run-rule, 11-3., after six innings.
