Springfield, Mass. – April 16, 2024 – The Springfield College softball team fell to Western New England University, 5-2, in a single non-conference game this afternoon at Golden Bear Softball Park.
Western New England improved to 15-9, while Springfield dipped to 19-5-1.
Springfield produced nine hits on the day highlighted by a 2-for-4 effort at the plate by
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.).
Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) and
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.) both drove in single runs for the Pride.
Western New England struck for the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Madison Mason doubled in Kailey Carrano. Springfield immediately answered in the second as
Breannah McCann (Poway, Calif.) tripled to right before Puskas knocked her in on a hit to center to even the score at 1-1.
The Golden Bears registered single runs in the second and third, both on fielding miscues by the Pride, and then added two addition tallies in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Mason.
Springfield attempted to rally in both the sixth and seventh innings with two runners left on in both frames. Santiago plated
Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, N.Y.) on a double to the gap in the sixth and the Pride had runners on first and third in the seventh, but Emilia Garcia struck out the final batter of the game to end it by a 5-2 final.
