Women's Lacrosse Falls To No. 18 Babson

Springfield, Mass. – April 20, 2024 – A nine-goal second quarter propelled Babson past Springfield College, 16-9, in a showdown of conference unbeatens in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse clash.

Babson, which was ranked 18th nationally this week, moved to 13-2, 9-0, while the Pride had its eight-game winning streak snapped as it fell to 13-3, 8-1.

Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) netted four goals for the Pride and Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two helpers.  Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) produced 12 saves and Hannah Hibbert (Center Harbor, N.H.) filled up her stat sheet with four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls.

Babson's Amelia Novitch, Clare Connelly, and Lily Ives all had four points in the win as the Beavers had a 37-26 advantage on shots.  Connelly was dominant on the draws with 16 herself in aiding the visitors to a 21-8 edge in the statistic.  Kathleen Murphy had 12 saves and kept Springfield to just 1-of-6 on free-position attempts.

Springfield opened up the scoring at the 6:08 mark when Isabella Mazzi (Niantic, Conn.) delivered a great inside feed to Samantha Andresen (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) who pumped home a quick stick goal.  The Beavers would respond with two goals in the final 2:56 of the frame, with Connelly's powerplay goal with 27 seconds remaining putting the visitors ahead for good.

Babson would string together the first seven goals of the second quarter, including a pair from Jessica Evans, as its lead grew to 9-1 with 2:14 remaining following a free-position strike by Novitch.  Johnson scored the Pride's first goal in nearly 20 minutes on an unassisted marker at 1:28, only to have the Beavers score twice inside the final minute to gain an 11-2 halftime cushion.

Springfield poured in four goals in the first 4:15 of the second half, with Lalancette netting a pair and Karen Joy (South Windsor, Conn.) scoring a man-down goal at 10:15m to force Babson into a timeout. Novitch responded with a free-position goal for Babson at 6:13, only to have Lalancette record consecutive unassisted strikes to make it a 12-8 contest with 2:50 on the clock.

However, Babson would score the game's next four goals and and keep the hosts off the scoreboard for nearly 15 minutes as it pulled away fo for the triumph.
